Hey book lovers! Remember the days when uploading an EPUB book to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) was a no-go and we were forced to convert our EPUBs to MOBI just to get them on our Kindles?
Well, times have certainly changed!
Amazon has finally jumped on the EPUB bandwagon and now, just like every other ebook retailer out there, they’re all about that EPUB life. And that’s great news for us Kindle users who may have received a free ebook from an author or an advanced reader copy (ARC).
So, let’s dive in and find out how to get those EPUBs on our Kindle devices!
By the way, if you want your EPUB done right, it will need to be formatted well as well. That’s why I recommend Atticus as my go-to formatting program. It’s cheap and easy to use, and it’s available on virtually all platforms. You can check it out here, or read my review of the program here.
Option #1: Just Email the EPUB Fil to Your Kindle
The first method we’re going to talk about is emailing the EPUB file directly to your Kindle. I know it may sound a little complicated at first, but trust me, it’s a piece of cake.
Getting a Kindle Email Address
First things first, you need to find your Kindle email address. Don’t worry, every Kindle device comes with one, and it’s automatically assigned.
Just log into your Amazon account, go to Account & Lists, select Content & Devices, and then the Devices tab. From there, find your device in the list and click on it.
You should see the Kindle email address listed (it ends in “@kindle.com”). Copy that email and save it for later.
Next, we need to make sure that your main email address is authorized to send books to this Kindle email. Just go to the Preferences tab in the Content & Devices area, find the Personal Document Settings section, and add your email to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
Easy peasy!
Emailing to Your Kindle
Now, it’s time to email your EPUB file to your Kindle. Just create a new email in your email service, attach the EPUB file, and send it to the Kindle email you collected earlier.
And the best part? You don’t even need a subject line or content in the body of the email! All you need is the EPUB file and the Kindle email, and you’re good to go. You’ll receive a verification email from Amazon, so just open it up, hit the verify button, and voila! Your EPUB file is now on your Kindle.
So, there you have it, folks. Emailing your EPUB file to your Kindle is quick, simple, and straightforward.
Additional Tips
Just a few more important things to keep in mind when sending those EPUBs to your Kindle via email. First up, you can send up to 25 attachments in one email, which is pretty cool! And, you can have up to 15 email addresses approved to send those attachments, so your friends can send you books too.
Now, here’s a little tip to save some space – you can compress your EPUBs into a ZIP file. Don’t worry, Amazon is pretty smart and will unzip those files before transferring them to your Kindle. And, if you’re wondering what other file types you can send, here’s the list: .DOC, .DOCX, .HTML, .HTM, .RTF, .TXT, .JPEG, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, .BMP, and .PDF.
One final thing to keep in mind – make sure your device is connected to the internet when you send the email. That’s it! Now you’re all set to send those EPUBs to your Kindle and get reading!
Option #2: Use the Send to Kindle Tool
Have no fear, the “Send to Kindle” desktop application is here! Whether you’re a PC or Mac user, this app is your new best friend.
After you download and install the app, all you need to do is link it to your Amazon account. It’s as simple as following the linking prompts, and before you know it, your account will be linked and ready to go.
Now, the real magic happens when you’re ready to upload an ebook. Just drag and drop the file to the “Send to Kindle” app, and voila! Your ebook will soon be available on your Kindle. This is hands down the easiest method for uploading ebooks to your Kindle, and it’s a game-changer.
So, what are you waiting for? Download the “Send to Kindle” app today and make your ebook uploading experience a breeze!
Option #3: Use the Kindle iOS or Android App (Spoiler Alert: This Option Sucks)
Did you know that you can also add an ebook file to your Kindle device using your mobile device? That’s right, you don’t even need a computer to get those books onto your Kindle.
All you need to do is make sure you have the Kindle app installed on your iOS or Android device.
Then, find your ebook file, wherever it may be stored on your phone, and open the share menu. Look for the option for “Kindle” or “Share to Kindle,” and select that. Easy peasy!
Now, I know what you’re thinking – this sounds like a lot of work, right? Well, it can be. This method can vary from one device to the next, making it a little complicated. That’s why I recommend using one of the other methods we talked about earlier.
Even when using a mobile device, it’s still easier to use the first method of sending the EPUB via email. Trust me, you’ll save yourself some headaches by sticking to that method.
What do I recommend?…Email
Right now, the best way to get that EPUB onto your Kindle is by sending it via email.
I know, I know, you’re thinking “what about the ‘Send to Kindle’ desktop app?” Unfortunately, it’s still relatively new and I haven’t heard much from people on whether it works well or not.
Email, thankfully, works.
But, in the meantime, whether you’re using a desktop device or a mobile device, the best way to get those EPUBs onto your Kindle is to send them via email. It’s simple, just attach the EPUB file to an email and send it to your Kindle email. And just like that, your EPUB will be available on your Kindle.
So, don’t wait any longer, grab that EPUB and send it to your Kindle now!
